FDL-5 HYPERSONIC RESEARCH CRAFT & LAUNCHER

the 1960s and 1970s, the U.S. Air Force conducted a number of studies on hypersonic re-entry vehicles for military space missions. The FDL-5 designed to be launched out the back of a C-5 Galaxy transport at high altitude. Once released, the spacecraft's solid-fuel booster would propel it into orbit. Upon re-entry, the FDL-5 would maneuver to a soft-landing via extendable wings.

Fantastic Plastic's 1:72 FDL-5 kit is a highly detailed model, and includes a cockpit interior with three space-suited astronaut figures. The canopy is water-clear resin. Build it with a solid-cast booster as the launch version (18 inches long total!), or the landed configuration with landing gear and extended wings. The kit-supplied JBOT decals allow you to build your FDL-5 with either civilian NASA markings or military USAF.

DRAGON SPACE KITS UPDATE

Dragon announced a 1/72 Saturn V and 1/72 Gemini Spacecraft w/Spacewalker at iHobby last month. Both will be pre-finished display models. Looks like the retail on the Saturn V will be close to $200US.

Coming in January are two new model kits:

1/72 Apollo 10 CSM + LM + LES. This represents key components of the Apollo 10 mission - the LM, CM and nosecone of the rocket. The nosecone is molded in clear to allow a clear view of the LM Snoopy installed inside.

1/72 Redstone Rocket w/Mercury Spacecraft. This includes the booster, capsule and a display base.
