My USS Sulaco is 1.4m long (20 cm smaller than original film model, according CINEFEX magazine (Aliens edition)) and fully detailed on both sides (the studio model has only one side detailed) She was made from polistyrene sheets and some PVC parts like motors and transparent window at main bridge. The cannons and cranes in both sides are mobile. It took six months to be done and has three separate parts to make easy to transport (motors, main hull, and antennae array). She has a little Dropship, in scale (5cm long, under main hull, in a atmospheric reentrance configuration, wings closed and protected canopy).
I found a lot of useful information in three main sources: "Aliens" edition of CINEFEX, Alien Tecnical Manual from Boxtree (England) and a lot of sketches from Syd Mead's books and his Graphic Art collections (Syd Mead is the best!).
